The Centre has recently requested the tourism department of Tamil Nadu to increase activities related to promotion with the Jammu and Kashmir tourism board. Under the ‘Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat’ programme, Tamil Nadu and Jammu and Kashmir are the sister states which focuses at promoting a mutual understanding between the locals of different Indian states and Union territories in learning culture, traditions & music, tourism & cuisine, sports and sharing their best practices. The activities at present are not connected with tourism aspects.
The development is initiated as Tamil Nadu is one of the largest markets for Jammu and Kashmir. The sources of tourism department of Tamil Nadu have mentioned introducing more tourist activities. It was highlighted recently during a virtual interaction arranged by the Union tourism ministry.
Many tourists from Tamil Nadu fly from Chennai to Srinagar every year and the promotional activities would encourage people from Srinagar to choose Chennai and fly down to the southern state and discover its heritage and spiritual tourism to the core.
J&K has come up as the top post-Covid destination in India. Sriharan Balan, chairman of a sub-committee, Travel Agents Association of India – Southern Region, have stated that out of 100 people coming from the southern states to Jammu and Kashmir, 30 to 35 comes from TN. “J&K is both a leisure and spiritual destination. While youngsters throng the valleys, senior citizens visit Shri Mata Vaishno Devi shrine,” he said. As tourists from TN to J&K had decreased in the past two years, it is increasing once again, he added.
